Charlotte gritted her teeth and pushed herself up, leaning against the cold wall. She stared up at the blinding hospital lights, a chill running through her from head to toe. She never thought she’d be scared of dying, not really. But now, facing it, she realized she was. Not for her own sake, but for the people counting on her.
A bitter smile tugged at her lips as she waited for her strength to return. When she finally felt steady, she turned and walked out of the hospital.
Jackson and Adonis were already waiting outside, their car parked at the curb. As soon as she stepped out, both brothers got out and hurried over.
“Charlotte,” they called together. Their faces tightened when they saw how pale she looked. “Are you alright? Are you feeling sick?”
Charlotte didn’t answer. She slid into the back seat, slumped against the cushion, and quietly rolled up her pant leg.
“Charlotte, are you…” Jackson’s voice trailed off when he saw the ugly bruise on her leg. He and Adonis exchanged a glance, and it was clear they understood what had happened.
“It’s nothing. Just bumped into something,” Charlotte muttered, dabbing medicine on her leg. “Any news about the bracelet?”
“It’s like it disappeared into thin air.” Jackson’s jaw was tight. They all knew the cure was in that bracelet, but it was nowhere to be found. The frustration was eating at them.
“We did find something new,” Jackson added. “Someone from Isle of Veil posted online, offering a crazy high price to get the bracelet back.”
Charlotte let out a short, rough laugh. “That’s actually a good idea. Do the same thing. Put out a reward.”
“Yes, ma’am.” Jackson nodded. Then, after a pause, he asked, “Charlotte, have you decided when you’re leaving for Isle of Veil?”
Charlotte thought for a second. “The night after tomorrow. Hamlin needs to be monitored for a full day after surgery. I have to stay in Cabinda until then.”
