Charlotte barely had time to collect her thoughts when the bedroom door swung open and heavy footsteps thudded across the floor. She instinctively yanked her pant leg down and spun around.

Anthony stood in the doorway. He wore a white shirt, the tie hanging crooked, his black suit jacket slung over his arm. His good looks were a little disheveled, and he looked more rattled than usual. It was obvious he’d just rushed back from The Blair Group.

“Do Mom and Dad know about the antidote?” Anthony kept his voice gentle as he walked over. “Did they give you a hard time?”

The look Franco shot him when he came in was enough to make anyone nervous.

“They were going to find out eventually.” Charlotte’s legs ached, so she eased herself onto the bed to avoid standing too long and raising suspicion. “It’s better this way.”

Anthony’s brow creased as he stepped closer. He let his warm hand brush over Charlotte’s cool cheek, his voice soft but full of concern. “Did you pick a date to leave for the Isle of Veil?”

“The day after tomorrow,” she replied, leaning back and lowering her eyes.

“Why do you look so pale?” Anthony leaned in, worry etched on his face. “Are you feeling okay?”

Just as he asked, his hand accidentally grazed her injured legs. Pain shot through her so sharp she almost gasped.

“I’m fine.” Charlotte’s expression tightened for an instant, but she forced herself to act normal, hiding everything she could.

“I’m going to take a shower.” She slipped away from Anthony’s arms, grabbed a towel, and disappeared into the bathroom.

She barely had time to turn the shower on—her clothes still on—when the bathroom door swung open.

“How did you—” Charlotte’s words caught in her throat, her frown deepening. She could have sworn she’d locked the door.

Anthony didn’t answer. He stepped forward, grabbed her wrist, and, with his other hand, spread a towel against the wall. He pressed her gently back.
