Cabinda.
Right after Anthony hung up with Charlotte, he drove straight out to the research institute on the edge of town.
Half an hour earlier, Dr. David had called with big news. The genetic mutation research had finally hit a breakthrough.
Dr. David was already waiting outside when Anthony arrived. He was in his white lab coat, looking tense. As soon as Anthony got out of the car, Dr. David walked over, lowered his voice, and said, “Let’s talk inside.”
No one else knew about the breakthrough. The place was full of nosy people, and keeping this under wraps, especially from her, was going to take effort.
“Alright.” Anthony nodded. His sharp features looked even colder than usual, like he was carrying a storm around with him. He had the vibe of a man who’d been left out in the cold.
The inner lab was locked down tight. Usually, only Charlotte and Dr. David were allowed inside. Anthony shrugged off his jacket and pulled on a lab coat, but even that couldn’t hide how tall and intimidating he was.
“We suspect the mutation comes from three different components,” Dr. David said, setting the vials on the table. His face was serious. “We need to test each one to see which is the cause. I’ve worked out the timing. All three will take about two months to test.”
For the antidote trials later, the mutation had to happen within two and a half months. That meant all three components needed to be tested on the same person.
“If there are three, we’ll just go one at a time,” Anthony replied. His voice was low and steady. “When do we start?”
Dr. David looked at him, frowning. He couldn’t help but warn, “Anthony, things could go wrong. You might run into unexpected side effects.”
“Will it kill me?”
“No, it shouldn’t.”
“Then do it.” Anthony’s eyes flicked over the complicated charts, his tone as firm as ever. “What do I need to get ready?”
“You really aren’t going to tell Lottie?” Dr. David still hadn’t moved. His face creased with worry. “It won’t kill you, but it’s not going to be easy either. You’ll be in for a rough time.”
