Imperial Heights.
Franco and Nora got back to the villa early, knowing Charlotte and Anthony's flight would land that evening.
When Nora saw Charlotte walk in safe and sound, her eyes filled with tears. She rushed over and wrapped her in a tight hug.
“You’re finally home. I was so worried about you.”
“I’m okay, really.” Charlotte let her mom hold on, then gently smoothed some messy hair from Nora’s forehead, a soft smile on her lips. “Come on, let’s sit on the couch. Let me check how you’re doing.”
Nora squeezed Charlotte’s hand and sat down beside her. Charlotte knelt in front of her and took her pulse. The results were much better than last time. The signs of the genetic mutation were slowly fading, and with a month or two more of rest, her mom should fully recover.
“Dad, Mom.” Anthony set Charlotte’s backpack down and greeted them. His voice was polite, but there was a trace of guilt behind it. He remembered how, when they left Cabinda, he and Lottie had arranged for someone to keep an eye on her parents.
“Have a seat,” Franco said, casting Anthony a brief look and frowning a little. He’d planned to be angry, to give the boy a hard time. But soon, Anthony would be his son-in-law, calling him “Dad.” That thought calmed his irritation.
“The genetics lab was destroyed. What about the antidote?” Nora’s worry showed in the deep lines on her forehead as she looked at Charlotte. “Are you really alright, Lottie?”
“I’m fine.” Charlotte smiled gently. “And you don’t need to stress about the antidote. Dr. David will have results in two or three months.”
Two or three months… Nora’s frown deepened. She was more worried about whether Charlotte’s body could hold out that long.
“Are you sure you want to get engaged?” Nora asked quietly, glancing at Charlotte and Anthony talking nearby. “You’re only nineteen.”
