The nausea hit Charlotte out of nowhere, sharp and overwhelming. Her heart skipped a beat at the rush of discomfort, her body suddenly feeling foreign to her. She grabbed the glass of water at her side and took a few desperate gulps, trying to calm her roiling stomach.
It helped a little.
“What’s wrong?” Anthony noticed her pale face right away. He wrapped his arms around her, searching her expression with worry etched deep into his features. “Is it the gene mutation acting up again?”
That didn’t seem right though. Nausea wasn’t one of the usual symptoms.
Charlotte caught his concerned look and thought back on all the weird changes her body had been going through lately. For a moment, she just stared, lost in thought.
“Why aren’t you saying anything?” Anthony pressed, his nerves clearly getting the best of him. “Where’s your medication?”
“I’m out,” Charlotte answered quietly.
She’d run out back on the Isle of Veil.
“Lie down for a bit, okay? I’ll call Dr. David and have him send over more.” Anthony was already up, reaching for his phone, looking about ready to panic just because she frowned.
“No, it’s fine.” Charlotte caught his hand, her face stiff and her voice a little rough. “It’s just my stomach. I’m okay now.”
“Here?” Anthony crouched in front of her, his hand warm where it rubbed gentle circles on her stomach. He looked so serious. “Does it hurt a lot?”
Charlotte gave a small shake of her head. She felt spaced out. “I’d really just like some hot water.”
“I’ll get it for you.” Anthony pressed a kiss to her cheek, then hurried out of the room.
When the door closed, Charlotte’s eyes drifted down to her stomach. No way. Seriously? They hadn’t even done it that many times, and they’d always used protection. Was Anthony really that unstoppable?
Annoyed, she raked her fingers through her hair. It took her a few seconds, but she finally gathered herself enough to check her pulse.
