As soon as Rena finished speaking, a line of black sedans rolled up in the distance. The one in the center, a ridiculously long, luxury Lincoln, was impossible to miss.
“That’s definitely Grandfather’s car.” Rena clenched her fists, her nerves a mess. She shot a worried look at Aloys. “Dad, do you think he’s here for the bracelet?”
Aloys narrowed his eyes, deep lines creasing his face as he frowned. “I honestly have no idea what’s going through Allanson’s mind.”
Allanson had spent his whole life chasing the cause of the genetic mutation and the cure for it. Now that the cure was right within reach, no one could say for sure if he’d turn on Charlotte just to get his hands on the bracelet.
“Anthony, that’s Allanson’s car.”
The second the convoy came into view, Jackson, Adonis, and Hans tightened their grip on their weapons. Everyone was on edge, eyes glued to the approaching cars.
“Are you scared?” Anthony stood firm, glancing down at Charlotte in his arms. Her face barely changed at all. His voice dropped, gentle. “Looks like we’re in for another fight.”
Charlotte’s lips lifted into a faint smile, her eyes curving in a way that made her look both stunning and mischievous. “A little.”
A little? Anthony almost laughed. Charlotte was the type who wasn’t afraid of anything. He’d only asked to tease her, never expecting her to actually admit it. That just wasn’t like her.
“Anthony, you have to protect us.”
She stepped closer, pressing herself into him, her voice low and a little rough around the edges.
Anthony assumed she meant Lottie, Jackson, and Adonis, so he didn’t take it too seriously.
“Alright.” He reached up, brushing a stray piece of hair behind Charlotte’s ear. His fingers lingered on her cheek, his eyes softening. “I’ll protect you.”
“We,” Charlotte corrected gently.
