When Charlotte spoke up, everyone in the room froze for a second. You could almost hear their hearts skip a beat.
“Lottie’s right,” Patricia admitted, looking a little embarrassed as she struggled to her feet with Lavinia’s help. “Nora, don’t hold back. Give this troublemaker what he deserves.”
“Yeah, go ahead and beat him,” Lavinia chimed in, totally serious. “Really. If you kill him, we won’t complain, and if you break something, we won’t expect you to pay for his care.”
Anthony stood there, lips pressed tight, his whole face shadowed by a stormy mood. He looked miserable. He used to wonder if Lavinia was really his mom. Now he knew for sure she wasn’t.
“Hey, you brat, aren’t you going to kneel and apologize?” Matthew got a glare from his wife and immediately took it out on Anthony. He leaned in and whispered, “I’m telling you, you’d better make it up to your mom before the night’s over. If not, things won’t go well for either of us.”
Anthony just stared back. Was he really supposed to risk his life to make Mom happy? Still, deep down, he knew he was in the wrong this time.
“I’m really sorry.” He straightened his jacket and walked over to where Robert, Franco, and Nora were sitting, standing up tall and respectful.
He was just about to kneel when Robert held up a hand and stopped him.
“These two kids did show up a little early,” Robert said quietly, giving Charlotte a look. “But since they’re already here, it’s fate. Lottie doesn’t know much yet, so you need to take care of her from now on.”
“Yes, Grandpa,” Anthony replied, bowing his head. “Don’t worry, I’ll look after Lottie and the twins. I won’t let anything happen to them.”
“That’s what I want to hear.” For the first time, a smile flickered on Robert’s face. He waved Charlotte over and squeezed her hand gently. “To be honest, I always thought my first great-grandchild would come from one of your three brothers. But looks like I was wrong... and that’s okay.”
