When Anthony saw the caller ID, his heart skipped a beat. His fingers tightened around the phone, knuckles going white.
“What’s wrong?” Charlotte asked, sprawled lazily across the sofa. Her lips moved just a little, eyes sparkling as she looked over at him. “Is that from the lab?”
Anthony nodded. “Yeah, they finished analyzing the bracelet.” He set his bowl down on the coffee table, grabbed a wet wipe, and gently cleaned the corner of Charlotte’s mouth. He told one of the staff to bring her coat, then carefully draped it over her shoulders. Pulling her closer, he wrapped an arm around her. “Are you feeling okay? They didn’t bother you, did they?”
“Huh?” Charlotte tipped her chin up, catching Anthony staring at her. Actually, he was staring at her belly, and there was absolutely no fatherly warmth in his eyes.
“Oh, they bothered me. What are you gonna do about it, Anthony?” Charlotte shot him a flat look, the hint of a smirk curling her lips. She narrowed her eyes at him, like she was just waiting for something entertaining to happen.
Anthony had nothing to say. He was completely at a loss. He couldn’t scold her, couldn’t do anything.
Charlotte reached out, hooked his chin with her finger, then took his hand and gave him a teasing smile. “Poor daddy. The hard part hasn’t even started yet.”
Anthony was silent. He looked like he’d swallowed a lemon.
Anthony drove them himself. Jackson, Adonis, and Hans followed behind, each leading a team. Their cars kept a careful distance, boxing Anthony’s car in and making sure no one could get too close.
“Strawberry,” Anthony said as he slowed the car even more, unwrapping a lollipop with one hand and passing it over to Charlotte.
She took it without a word, popped it in her mouth, and leaned back.
“There’s more snacks in the glove box,” Anthony told her, glancing over with a softness in his eyes that made it so obvious how much he cared. “Just grab whatever you want. Don’t let yourself get hungry.”
“Alright,” Charlotte said, nodding. She turned to look out the window, noticing all the cars surrounding them. She couldn’t help but twitch her lips. Wasn’t this a little too much?
