Before Anthony could get a word out, his legs buckled and he dropped to the floor.

Charlotte timed everything perfectly. She set the glass lid on the beaker, smothering the blue flames inside, and then turned to walk right over to Anthony.

“Lottie…”

He caught sight of her and tried to push himself up, but his legs wouldn’t cooperate. All the strength had left his body.

Anthony’s expression darkened. His eyes were rimmed red, glaring up at her in a way that made it clear he was furious.

“You’ve lied to me so many times. I don’t think it’s too much to pay you back just once, do you?”

Charlotte stopped and crouched in front of him, her fingers soft as she traced his cheek. She smiled, calm and gentle.

“Don’t do this. Don’t be reckless.”

He couldn’t move a muscle, but his voice was still there, weak but sharp. “You’re pregnant. You can’t take the antidote.”

“Remind me, which one of us is the doctor here?” Charlotte teased, resting her chin in her hand and looking right at him. “The antidote won’t hurt the babies. There are only two possible outcomes. Either I recover, or the trial fails and I die.”

She spoke slowly, almost as if she was talking him through a recipe she’d made a thousand times. “You thought this through already, didn’t you? Even if the experiment fails, at least I’d still be alive. Dr. David would use the data to improve the antidote and save me. Isn’t that what you planned?”

Anthony’s mouth opened, but nothing came out. His face grew even harder.

He couldn’t deny it.

That was exactly why he didn’t want her to be the test subject.

“I’ve never been afraid of dying, you know.” Charlotte’s voice was soft, almost like a secret. She twirled the antidote in her glass, her beautiful face leaning in close to his. There was a faint smile on her lips. “And I never wanted to survive by stepping over someone else’s body.”
