Emily’s eyelashes fluttered, and her heart skipped offbeat. Seriously, at a time like this, Kenneth was still thinking about romance? She was beginning to suspect he’d gotten hurt just to get her attention.

“Whether you let me or not…” Kenneth leaned in so close she could feel his breath brushing her ear. His voice was rough and stubborn. “I’ve decided you’re the only one for me.”

“Watch out for your injury!” Emily’s ears went bright red as she tried—really tried—to keep her heartbeat in check. She lowered her voice, nearly whispering, “Lie back down. I’ll call someone in to help put the ointment on.”

“But aren’t you here right now?” Kenneth placed the tube of ointment right into her hand, not giving her an out.

“Me?” Emily’s eyes flicked over to his bare chest. Her cheeks turned a blotchy shade of red. “Maybe someone else should do it. Really.”

“I don’t want anyone else.” Kenneth’s fingers tightened around her hand, keeping her by his side. He spoke low, almost sulky. “You know I don’t like people touching me.”

Emily pressed her lips together, frowning a little.

“If you really don’t want to, it’s okay,” Kenneth said, slumping against the sofa. He looked awfully pale and a bit defeated, voice tinged with just the right amount of hurt. “It’ll just hurt more, but I can handle it.”

Total sympathy act. Still, the pain was no joke. If he’d known Emily could hit like that, he would’ve dodged a little farther. Lucky it wasn’t his head. Otherwise, he’d probably be lying in a funeral home.

Emily’s resolve started to waver. Seeing that, Kenneth dialed up his act. “It’s not really about the pain. If I don’t get medicine on it soon, it might not heal right. I could even end up with a handicap.”

Emily just stood there and watched him put on a show.

Kenneth wasn’t done. “Not like it matters if I do,” he added dramatically, hooking her finger with his. He managed a pout. “I’d still have my left hand. As long as you don’t mind.”
