Footsteps echoed from the end of the hallway, sharp and impossible to miss.
“Don’t make a sound!”
The man’s eyes flicked with panic as he heard someone approaching. Without warning, he pulled out a fruit knife. The way he looked at Emily was pure threat. “If you scream, I’ll cut your throat.”
Emily pressed herself against the wall, icy fear gripping every nerve. The silver blade hovered only inches from her skin, and for a moment, it felt like her heart simply stopped.
“Emily, are you scared?”
He seemed to sense her hesitation and edged even closer, his smile twisted and cruel. His voice dropped to a murmur that made her skin crawl. “Don’t be scared. I love you so much, how could I ever hurt you?”
She clamped her jaw tight, holding her breath. With her arms behind her back, her fingers fumbled desperately at her phone, blindly searching through her contacts.
“There’s no one in the world who loves you more than I do.”
Every word made his smile grow darker, his whole face warped with crazed emotion. “Emily, let’s get married, all right? Let me stay with you forever.”
The knife pressed against her neck. Fear crushed her, thick and suffocating. Sweat slipped down her back. Her phone slid from her hand and crashed onto the floor.
Panic made her vision blur. She glanced down and saw she’d accidentally dialed Kenneth’s number. His contact always showed up first on her phone. It made sense.
Except Kenneth was in Cabinda. Even if he found out she was in trouble, what could he possibly do from there?
“Kenneth?”
The man caught the name lighting up her screen. Instantly, hot rage twisted his features. His eyes burned red. Fists clenched. A vein popped on his temple as fury exploded out of him. “So, the rumors about you and Kenneth are true?”
The knife trembled wildly against her throat. Emily froze, scanning the room for any way out, ready for her chance.
“How could you even like him?”
When she didn’t answer, he barked at her, menace filling his voice. “Other guys will just lie to you. I’m the only one who would ever truly care. No, I have to keep you. No one else can have you.”
