“What’s going on up there?” Helen called from the kitchen, the noise upstairs pulling her attention away. She hurried up. “Charlotte, Anthony, who—”

“And her?” Charlotte gestured toward Helen without really looking, making Helen freeze, too shocked to move.

“Helen,” Emily whispered, her voice barely louder than a breath.

Kenneth’s face looked like he’d just taken the worst punch. Emily remembered everyone. Except him.

“Helen, take Emily back to her room and help her eat some breakfast,” Charlotte said, lips tight, her whole face hard, frustration clear in every word.

“Yes, Charlotte.” Helen dipped her head and gently led Emily away. As they passed Kenneth, Emily bit down on her lip and edged past him, like her body was acting on instinct.

Once the bedroom door clicked shut, Kenneth finally dragged his eyes from the hall to Charlotte, his voice rough in his throat. “Emily…”

“In the study,” Charlotte cut in.
