Charlotte dropped onto the bench, scooped up the menu, and started ordering without missing a beat. “So, what’s everyone eating?”
She really was starving. She needed a good meal before she could worry about anything else.
Around her, the others were doing their best to act cool. This was supposed to be a proposal, and yet here was the bride-to-be, happily munching on barbecue, while the rest of them were so anxious they didn’t even know where to put their hands. It felt like their hearts might leap out of their chests.
Who was the main character here anyway?
When nobody answered, Charlotte lifted her eyes and gave them an easy, almost lazy look. “Weren’t you the ones begging for barbecue?”
“Yes, yes, totally,” everyone chimed in at once. They grabbed their own menus and leaned together, whispering.
“What time did Anthony say?” Shirley asked under her breath, swallowing hard. “Charlotte’s starting to get suspicious. If we keep stringing her along, that look she’s giving me is going to do me in before the nerves do.”
“Nine thirty,” Andrew replied, his frown deep and worried. “That so-called perfect husband said Charlotte always gets hungry around now. He told us to let her eat first.”
Nine thirty? Stella glanced at her phone. It was only eight thirty. That meant they still had a whole hour to go.
Stella tilted her head, watching Charlotte eye the grill with obvious anticipation, her eyes sparkling with excitement. Stella couldn’t help but smile. “Let’s just do what Anthony said. Let her eat first.”
If Charlotte didn’t get her food, she’d be in a terrible mood. And when that happened, Anthony would definitely be the one to suffer.
Meanwhile, on the hotel’s top floor, a crowd had gathered.
On one side sat Patricia, Matthew, Lavinia, Emily, and Norma. Across from them were Robert, Franco, Nora, Samantha, Kevin, and Charlotte’s three older brothers. The women had all settled into their seats, while the men stood behind them, almost as tense as the team downstairs.
