After Robert and Patricia left, Nora, Franco, Lavinia, Matthew, Samantha, and Kevin all made their way over to Charlotte, each carrying the same little packages.

“Thank you,” Lavinia said softly, pulling Charlotte in for a gentle hug. She reached up, smoothing Charlotte’s hair with a warmth that was impossible to miss.

“For what?” Charlotte’s mouth curled into a smile. She prided herself on always keeping calm, but with everyone crowding around, even she felt her composure wavering.

Lavinia cupped Charlotte’s face in her hands, eyes overflowing with affection. “Thank you for agreeing to marry Anthony.”

Charlotte blinked, a bit thrown off. “I don’t really get what you mean.”

“If it weren’t for you, who else would take on that cold, stand-offish man? What girl would have the patience?” Lavinia said with a laugh, hugging her again, this time so tightly Charlotte almost lost her balance. “I’m so grateful you came into his life.”

Charlotte’s cheeks colored. She let out a shy little laugh. “Seriously, you don’t have to thank me.”

Matthew stepped up then, smiling as he gave Charlotte a light pat on the shoulder. “Thank you.” He looked sincere, then went to sit in the family section with his wife.

“Lottie.” As they left, Nora stepped forward and slipped her hand into Charlotte’s. “I…”

She didn’t even get the words out. Tears started streaming down her cheeks before the sentence could even begin.

“What is it?” Charlotte frowned when she saw her mom’s face. She brought up her hand, carefully brushing away the tears. Her voice turned incredibly soft, so different from usual. “If you don’t want me to get married, I won’t. It’s fine, really.”

“No, that’s not it.” Nora was a mess, her face blotchy and damp. She shook her head, fingers trembling as she touched Charlotte’s belly through her dress. “If you don’t get married, these little ones won’t have a dad.”

Charlotte couldn’t believe it. So it wasn’t about her getting married, but rather the babies not having a father? For a split second she wondered if the twins would even let her keep the top spot in the family.
