Shirley sat quietly in her chair, a book open in her lap. Out of nowhere, she heard a soft thump. Glancing down, she realized her phone was now lying on the floor. When did that happen? She barely had time to think; her head was fuzzy and heavy.

Right then, the officials stepped onto the stage.

“That’s Dean Hartley in the middle,” someone sitting next to her whispered.

“He has to sign off on every scholarship. Especially this one, because the amount is huge. I heard this time the approval process was super strict. I wonder who’s getting the big prize.”

As she spoke, the girl tipped her chin toward Shirley and lowered her voice. “Word is, it might be her.”

“Shirley?” another student blurted out. “She’s a freshman. First she scores the exchange program, now she’s on track to land that giant scholarship? She’s got to have some serious connections.”

The whole auditorium went quiet. Cameras and lights all turned to the stage. Reporters were everywhere, getting ready. Less than five minutes until the names were announced.

Hartley pulled out his phone. He glanced at it, and just like that, his face darkened.

“Let’s welcome Dean Hartley to announce the winners of this year’s scholarships.”

Hartley seemed to return to himself, but he looked tense as he walked to the podium. He stared at the winners’ list in his hand, his thoughts lingering on the message he’d just read. His expression grew darker by the second. Was this really the person Patricia had recommended? Why did she seem so shady?
