“Charlotte, I’m so sorry…”
The staff member slumped to the floor, wiping sweat from his brow, apologizing over and over.
“It’s not your fault. I should have told you who I was.” Charlotte gave him a gentle smile, then turned to Daniel. “Daniel, I’m heading up now.”
“Alright.” Daniel nodded, smiling back.
She stopped after a few steps, glancing over her shoulder at the shaken staffer. Her voice was calm and easy. “You did a good job today. Keep it up.”
The staff member just blinked, looking confused. Daniel was just as surprised.
She took the elevator straight up to the top floor. The doors slid open, and she glanced around, looking for the CEO’s office.
That was when she heard voices.
Charlotte paused, looking down the hallway, and spotted a girl with big wavy hair and a red mini-skirt that barely covered her. She clutched a tray with coffee and a croissant, peeking around the corner like she was on some kind of secret mission. The girl’s voice was syrupy and soft. “Are you sure Anthony’s still here?”
“Positive,” whispered the girl next to her, who had a messy short haircut. “I heard he’s not going home tonight.”
“Not going home?” The wavy-haired girl pursed her red lips, thick makeup exaggerating the sarcastic tilt of her smile. “Anthony’s about to get married, but he’s already avoiding home. There’s got to be someone there he doesn’t want to see.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?” The short-haired girl sounded a little worried.
“Isn’t it obvious? Anthony and Charlotte are just marrying for business. There’s no real love there.” The one with curls ran her hands through her hair, her confidence on full display. “She’s the princess of the Gates family, sure, and she’s pretty. But she always looks so serious. What man actually likes a woman who’s so stiff and boring?”
