Stella blinked, trying to steady her senses after the fall. When she finally lifted her head, she realized she’d landed right in Roger’s arms. The position was so close, so intimate, that her face flamed with embarrassment.

All around them, the maids had stopped working. They stared at the two as if they couldn’t believe what they were seeing.

It wasn’t until she caught sight of Roger’s face that Stella really panicked. She quickly looked away and started to pull herself up, doing her best to escape the awkward tangle.

“I’m okay, really. Thank you,” she muttered, her voice barely above a whisper.

“Hold on.” Roger’s hand closed gently around her wrist, stopping her from getting up. He turned to one of the maids, his tone calm but commanding. “Bring the first-aid kit.”

“Roger…” Stella frowned, uncomfortable with all the attention. She tried to pull her hand free, but his grip was steady.

“You’re hurt. Don’t move.” Roger shot a look at her scraped hand, then guided her gently to the sofa and sat her down beside him.

She tugged at her hand again, but he didn’t let go. Desperate, she glanced over at Charlotte for some kind of rescue.

Charlotte simply smiled, a glint of amusement in her eyes as she took another bite of cake. “You might as well let Roger take care of it. He may be a forensic doctor, but he’s got the medical skills to match any real doctor. He won’t hurt you.”

That wasn’t what Stella was worried about, but she had no choice.

A maid hurried over with the first-aid kit and started to open it, but Roger’s voice shut her down. “Just leave it. I’ve got this.”

The girl gave Stella a last, curious look, then slipped away quietly.

Roger rolled up his sleeves, kneeling in front of Stella. His dark eyes seemed to take in everything as he studied her hand. “You’ve scraped your palm pretty badly. I’ll have to clean it with some antiseptic. It might sting a bit, so just try to bear with it.”
