Meanwhile, in another part of the house...
Emily was half-carrying, half-dragging a slightly drunk Kenneth to the guest room. He was heavier than he looked. She finally managed to get him to sit, then let out a deep breath.
“Sit tight. I’ll get you some water.”
Emily tossed her bag onto a chair and tried to shrug the stiffness out of her shoulders. Just as she turned to go, Kenneth caught her wrist.
“Emily,” he said, a little slurred.
He was sprawled on the sofa, but with one surprisingly smooth move, he pulled her down so she landed on his lap. The heat of his breath mixed with the sharp scent of alcohol, washing right over her face.
“What are you doing?” Emily pulled her head back, her cheeks burning. She was so nervous it felt like her stomach might twist itself in knots.
Sure, they were officially dating. They held hands, they kissed, but things never went much further than that. Not really. Especially not when the vibe in the room felt like this, and Kenneth was so obviously drunk. It felt way too easy for something to go sideways.
“Emily…” Kenneth nuzzled closer, pressing a kiss under her chin. There was a goofy little smile on his face. “We’ve been together for so long.”
She couldn’t help laughing, just a little. “You do realize it’s only been a month?”
Emily honestly couldn’t tell if he was drunk for real, or just acting out. Either way, something wasn’t right. She frowned at him gently. “Let go of me and I’ll grab you some water, okay?”
“No.” Kenneth’s grip only tightened. Now he was showing off that epic raspy voice of his, courtesy of all the drinking. “Emily… do you wanna get married?”
Married?
Her heart absolutely skipped a beat.
Was he actually proposing? Now? Who even does that after a month? Especially in a situation like this. It was totally unserious.
“I’m way too young!” Emily replied, avoiding his eyes. Her lips moved, but her voice was barely above a whisper. “Can we just… wait a bit?”
Truth was, she’d been waiting forever to hear something like this. But still… she couldn’t just give in so easily. She’d waited ten whole years for this guy. No way was she going to make it simple for him.
Kenneth tilted his head, giving her this lovesick, dreamy look. His eyes had gone all soft and unfocused. “My girlfriend is so pretty,” he sighed.
She could feel her heartbeat going wild. Seriously, what was it about him tonight? He was extra attractive, her defenses were breaking down by the second.
“If you’re drunk, just lie down and go to sleep,” Emily muttered, trying to pretend she was still in control. “Don’t make trouble.”
