"Do you like me?" Roger asked, a faint smirk tugging at his lips, completely ignoring her question.

There wasn't a trace of panic on his face, as if he weren't about to be buried alive in a matter of seconds.

Seeing him smile at a time like this made Stella furious. For the first time, she glared at him with genuine anger. "You—"

"Forget it," Roger chuckled, panting heavily as he shoved away another pile of heavy sludge. "If you don't like me, I can live with that. I guess I'm just crazy about you. It has to be you."

"Almost there," Roger grunted. The faster the mountain collapsed, the faster he tore at the earth. "Try again."

Stella nodded and yanked herself upward, but she was trapped too deep.

"Don't panic," Roger said, his gaze sharper and colder than the freezing storm. "We're going to be fine."

Hearing his steady voice actually managed to soothe her racing heart. Were they really going to be fine?

"Try it now!" Roger cleared a massive chunk of debris and wrapped his arms securely around her torso. As she pushed upward, he hauled her with all his might.
