Fiancée?

The word instantly silenced the grand hall. Stella's head snapped up, her eyes locking onto Roger as a loud buzzing filled her ears. The rest of the Gates family shared a spontaneous, knowing smile.

Even in her weakened state, the word "fiancée" forced Veronica to perk up. She tracked the source of the voice.

There sat Stella, perfectly positioned in the center of the sofa with Roger faithfully by her side. Flanking them were the Gates patriarch, Roger's parents, the Gates family's eldest daughter... and Anthony and Charlotte.

The Gates family had actually accepted her? A fiancée?

The very thought made Veronica feel a nauseating mix of tragedy and absurdity. Aside from a pretty face... what right did she have to be the future Mrs. Gates?!

"What else do you want?" Funk demanded, glaring at the imposing bodyguards blocking the door.

"You exposed the private information of an innocent person online, maliciously directing internet mobs to attack her and causing severe psychological trauma..."

Sitting off to the left, her fingers tapping rhythmically against the table, Lottie finally spoke. Her expression was utterly detached, yet her aura was lethally sharp. "What do you think we want?"

Veronica, slumped weakly against her father, opened her mouth to argue, but her throat was too dry to produce a sound.

"So what if it was posted online?" Funk's eyes darted away defensively before he regained his composure. "It was nothing but the truth. Besides, Veronica has already been punished. You've tortured her until she barely has a breath left. What more do you want? Her life?"

"Bingo."

Lottie crossed her arms and sauntered over to the father and daughter, staring down at them with glacial apathy. "You guessed it. I want her life."
