She honestly couldn’t wrap her head around it. Did Charlotte really have some kind of magical charm?

In the car, Anthony sat on the right. Charlotte was in the middle. Emily was on the far left, both hands hooked around Charlotte’s arm, grinning like she’d just won the lottery.

“Charlotte, can I come hang out with you from now on?”

“Sure,” Charlotte said, not bothering to shake Emily off. She let her cling like an octopus.

“Then I’m adding you on social media,” Emily said, already digging out her phone.

“Alright.”

“Hurry and accept!” Emily said, bouncing in her seat. Charlotte’s arm was still trapped, so Emily leaned in, saying, “Here, let me do it for you.”

Emily’s bubbly chatter filled the whole car.

Anthony turned his head, his eyes dark as night, glancing from Charlotte to Emily’s hands. His gaze went ice cold. “Hands off. Sit properly.”

“Anthony…”

“Be quiet.”

“But I…”

He didn’t let her finish. Anthony reached forward, put his hand on Charlotte’s waist, and pulled her close until she was pressed firmly at his side. His eyes warned, “Say one more word and you’re out of the car.”

Emily slapped her hand over her mouth and looked at Charlotte, blinking desperately for help.

“Don’t be so mean,” Charlotte said, tapping Anthony’s arm. She pulled her hand free, rummaged in her bag for a pen, and smiled at Emily. “Give me your stuff.”

“Okay!” Emily immediately handed over a pile from her bag. It was all of Charlotte’s voice work from over the years—movies, TV, radio dramas. There weren’t many, but every one was a classic.

“Charlotte, can you sign right here?”

“You ignored me for forty minutes and fifteen seconds.” Anthony’s lips brushed her ear, his voice soft and low. “Lottie, how are you going to make it up to me?”

That wounded look, the wounded voice, the wounded man…

“Oh,” Charlotte said, looking right at him. She blinked, and replied with complete seriousness, “How about you do three fewer practice tests tonight?”

Anthony’s face somehow got even darker.

Early the next morning, Charlotte was still half asleep when a shrill phone call rang out beside her.

“Grandma,” Anthony said, leaning over to comfort Charlotte through the blanket, his voice low and tinged with a helpless sort of laugh, “It’s still early. Charlotte went to bed late last night. She’s not awake yet.”

Went to bed late?

Patricia blushed on the other end of the line. She understood right away.
