She had already made up her mind. Did it really matter what he said?

Anthony let out a helpless laugh. He honestly hadn’t expected that the “Sweetie” his mom kept talking about was actually Lottie. The world was huge, but fate clearly liked to play these little tricks.

“What’s so funny?” Lavinia caught Anthony’s smirk and immediately felt wronged. She shot Matthew a pleading look. “Can you please say something to your son?”

“I’ll handle it.” Matthew came up behind Lavinia, slipping his hands around her waist, his voice gentle and coaxing. “What does it matter if your mom wants a goddaughter? Let her do what she wants. You’ve got your own business to worry about.”

“It’s true, her having a goddaughter has nothing to do with me…” Anthony replied, lifting his head and strolling over to Charlotte. He leaned down and gently pinched her cheek, his voice low and affectionate. “But if she becomes your daughter, how could she ever be your daughter-in-law?”

Lavinia froze, her lips parting in shock. Did Anthony just say Charlotte was his daughter-in-law?

She stood there for a few stunned seconds, and then a realization dawned. Spinning around, she stared at the two of them—standing so close, looking so comfortable together—her eyes growing wider and wider.

“You two…” Lavinia hesitated, her words tumbling out as she tried to make sense of it. “Your girlfriend. Is it… Charlotte?”

“Of course I do.”

If she’d known from the start that Anthony’s girlfriend was Lottie, there wouldn’t have been so much drama.

“I can’t believe Lottie is your girlfriend.” Lavinia stepped closer to Charlotte, her face breaking into a bright smile. “This is wonderful… just wonderful. You’re so lucky to have found such a smart and beautiful girlfriend.”

If only Lottie were a year older and already at the legal age for marriage. Then they could settle things sooner. Otherwise, she really worried that once Charlotte went to college and met younger boys, she might start to find Anthony less appealing.
