Everyone was a little thrown off by Charlotte’s results.
[What does it mean if there’s no score?] Andrew typed. His first instinct was that maybe she forgot to put her name on the test, but then again, it was impossible she’d forget on all six exams.
[There is a score,] Shirley jumped in to clarify. [If someone gets an insanely high score, the system sometimes hides it for a while, so the top universities and the media don’t go wild trying to poach the student.]
The important part was “insanely high.” Even Shirley’s 730 hadn’t been hidden, so Charlotte’s must be off the charts.
Andrew: [That’s incredible!]
Parrish: [Charlotte is amazing!]
Shirley: [Seriously, you’re a genius, Charlotte!]
Stella: [Congrats, Charlotte.]
Stella was a little disappointed she wouldn’t be going to the same school as Charlotte, but honestly, she was just happy for her. Charlotte deserved the best.
Charlotte lounged against her pillows, scrolling through the flood of group messages. She sent a screenshot of her results to Anthony, Kenneth, Roger, and Eleanor.
When Eleanor saw the message, she let out a sigh of pure relief. If Charlotte’s scores were hidden, she had to have gotten at least a 740.
Eleanor: [Start watching for calls from all the top schools. They’re going to be reaching out soon. Think about where you want to go.]
If nothing unexpected happened, Charlotte would probably pick The Cabinda University. It was the top school in Astoria, the dream of every student.
[Thank you,] Charlotte replied, as more messages popped in.
Roger: [Transfer sent.]
Kenneth: [Transfer sent.]
Anthony: [Have you decided which university you want to go to?]
“Don’t worry, if you come to Pinnacle, you can pick any major you want, tuition is completely free, and you’ll get a private dorm room.” The admissions officer paused, then added, “And you’ll get a generous scholarship too.”
He’d heard about Charlotte’s family going bankrupt recently and probably thought she’d need the money.
“What I’m saying is…”
“Really, our scholarship will be much higher than whatever The Cabinda University can give you.”
Pinnacle Global was just behind The Cabinda University and the two schools fought over top students every year.
Charlotte pressed her fingers to her forehead, her eyes dropping to the floor, her face calm and unreadable. “Sorry, I’m not interested.”
“Please think it over. If there’s anything you want, we’re open to negotiation.”
Charlotte was just about to turn them down again when another call started coming in. It was The Cabinda University.
