No wonder she could be friends with someone like Stella. It just made sense.
Charlotte didn’t even acknowledge her. She walked straight over to Stella, gently taking her hand. The sight of blood on Stella’s palm made Charlotte’s eyes go cold, but she kept her anger under control and spoke with surprising patience. “Go back to the dorm,” she said.
“Charlotte…” Stella’s voice was soft and worried.
“Go on. I’ve got this.” Charlotte gave Stella a firm pat on the back of her head, her tone leaving no room for argument.
“Okay. Just… don’t let them push you around.” Stella nodded, cradling her new cup, and headed back in the direction of the dorm.
“Did I say you could leave?” Janie’s voice was sharp as she pointed at Stella’s retreating figure. She was ready to chase after her, clearly still fuming.
Before Janie could get far, Charlotte grabbed her hand. Pain shot through Janie’s fingers, sharp enough to make her whole body tense up.
“What are you doing?” Janie gasped, not expecting Charlotte to get physical in front of everyone, just to stand up for Stella. The pain made her bend over, struggling to catch her breath.
Charlotte’s grip only tightened. She leaned in, her eyes cold as ice, and stared right into Janie’s face. “Stella told you, she has nothing to do with the Adams family. If you see her again, keep your distance. Got it?” Charlotte’s lips curled into a slow, deliberate smile as she watched Janie squirm. “If you mess with her one more time, things won’t end as easily as they did today. Is that clear?”
Olivia had been absolutely right. Charlotte was trouble.
Janie decided to back off for now and play the victim. There would be other chances to get revenge.
A little ways off, Charlotte’s coach, Cotton, was walking by. He glanced over just in time to see Charlotte towering over another girl, clearly giving her a piece of her mind. The girl on the ground looked small and scared.
Bullying, right here on campus? These kids really did need someone to put them in their place.
