In this standout chapter of the Romance novel The Mocked Miss’s Hidden Crowns, Carmen Henley introduces new challenges, powerful emotions, and major plot progress that captivate readers from beginning to end.

The second round was way tougher than the first. Out of fifteen contestants, only five would make it, and then those five had to fight for just three spots at the International Medical Association.

Letty thought she’d done pretty well. She glanced at Charlotte, who was sitting beside her, chin in her hand, looking like she’d rather be anywhere else. Letty couldn’t help but smirk.

Where did Charlotte even get the nerve? She barely tried on the test, yet here she was, waiting for the results like she had a shot. If it were me, I’d have handed in my paper and slipped out quietly, hoping no one noticed. When the scores come out, she’s going to embarrass all of Eldoria.

Backstage, the judges were busy grading. This year’s exam was the hardest one yet. Most of the students hadn’t even finished, never mind getting everything right. Every time they marked a paper, the judges sighed. It really did feel like the quality of medical students was getting worse every year.

There were ten judges, each assigned three questions. When they finished, they’d add up all the scores.

Lydia picked up Letty’s paper and checked the scores from the earlier sections. Not perfect, but pretty close. Among all the contestants, Letty stood out as one of the best. Lydia smiled, but that faded as soon as she reached the last three questions. The answers were right, but the way Letty got there was sloppy. A few chemical formulas were wrong, missing letters here and there. By the rules, she really shouldn’t get full marks.

Lydia glanced at the other judges, pressed her lips together for a moment, then went ahead and gave Letty full marks on those questions anyway. With that, Letty shot to the top of the scoreboard. First place, for now, was hers.

“Oh my God, am I seeing this right?”

Just as Lydia was feeling pleased with herself, one of the other judges spoke up, sounding completely shocked.

“This test is Charlotte’s? She was almost last in the first round. How did she get a perfect score?”

A perfect score? Lydia’s hand shook. She turned to look, hardly believing it. “What? Full marks?”

“Yeah.” The judge nodded and pushed the paper over to her. “We’ve already graded everything except the last three questions. All perfect. Only yours are left.”
