Kingswood University, lab.

Charlotte wore a loose white lab coat and a blue surgical mask. She sat at the microscope, her long legs tucked underneath, hands moving with practiced ease as she adjusted the settings. Every observation went straight into her notebook, neat and fast.

Her traditional medicine classmates crowded around her, phones out, filming her every step.

“I knew Black was amazing.”

“She’s better than half the professors here, honestly.”

“If only we had that missing ingredient, this experiment would be perfect.”

The missing ingredient wasn’t just a problem at Kingswood or Cabinda University. Even Solace University of Medicine in Astoria had to pause their research because no one could get it.

“That’s it for now.” Charlotte peeled off her gloves and slipped a finger under her mask, pulling it down to reveal a face so stunning, everyone had to take a second look. Her voice was calm. “Where’s Glenn?”

“In the dispensary next door.” Beasley was caught off guard by her looks and only remembered to answer when she spoke. His cheeks went pink. “Charlotte, are you… asking for time off?”

“Is that going to be an issue?” Charlotte asked, her eyes lazy as she wiped her hands with sanitizer.

“The school’s doing quality assessments. Administration’s really strict right now. Just this morning, Glenn said absolutely no one is allowed to miss class,” Beasley explained, looking serious. He remembered seeing a girl from another class try to ask for leave earlier, only to come out looking crushed. “Maybe just be careful,” he added, trying to be helpful.

Everyone knew Glenn was strict. No one could talk him into changing his mind about anything.
