Anthony had barely finished his warmup before the chase ended. What a waste of her precious sleep time.
“Yeah, let’s just go home and get some rest.”
He pressed a quick kiss to the corner of her mouth, then glanced up at Hans. “Drive.”
“Yes, Anthony…” Hans started, but his eyes flicked to the rearview mirror and he frowned. “Anthony, we’ve got company again. The kind that doesn’t care if they live or die.”
Seriously? Was this ever going to stop?
Hans squinted at the approaching headlights, studying them for a few seconds. “It’s Franco’s guys.”
Franco again?
Three cars, all coming in fast, radiating trouble.
They’d just survived one chase and now, before they could even catch their breath, Franco’s men were right on their tail. It had to be a setup. Franco was waiting for them to wear out, then he’d swoop in and snatch back the formula Charlotte had managed to get.
Hans looked stressed, waiting for Anthony to call the shots.
But before he could say anything, Charlotte straightened up in his lap, her voice cold. “This is ridiculous. Give me the gun.”
Hans blinked, startled, but handed her his pistol without thinking.
“Charlotte, what are you—”
He didn’t get to finish. Charlotte kicked open the car door, hooked her legs around the seat, leaned out, and raised the gun, aiming straight at the cars behind them.
The drivers in the other cars froze.
What was going on? Weren’t they supposed to be helping?
One of the men, the housekeeper, panicked and rolled down his window, grabbing his walkie-talkie. “She’s Franco’s guest. Don’t shoot. We—”
He didn’t get to finish either. A single shot knocked the walkie-talkie right out of his hand, leaving a trail of smoke.
