“This is Mrs. Hawk’s room.”

The butler gave a polite little bow and said in a smooth, gentlemanly voice, “Please wait just a moment.”

As soon as he finished, the door opened. Two doctors stepped out.

“Sorry, but we’ll need to disinfect you again.”

Charlotte pressed her lips together, glancing through the open doorway. The room was huge, packed with medical equipment. Doctors in crisp white coats hurried back and forth.

Right in the middle of it all was a massive double bed. Mrs. Hawk, looking so delicate and thin, was propped up against the headboard. Her head was down, and her long, dark hair fell like a curtain along her cheeks, hiding her entire face.

Franco leaned in close, speaking softly to the woman in his arms.

Actually, it looked more like he was trying to comfort her.

“Why won’t you take your medicine, hmm?” His voice was soft and gentle, so different from the cold, stern man from earlier.

Charlotte couldn’t see Mrs. Hawk’s face at all. She edged slightly to the side, hoping for a better view, but Mrs. Hawk’s hair and Franco’s back blocked her completely.

All she could make out were two pale, slender arms draped weakly around Franco’s waist. Mrs. Hawk’s fingers twitched a little, like she was trying to do something but just didn’t have the strength.

“Pretty Miss.”

The butler spoke again, this time a bit louder, snapping Charlotte out of her thoughts.

Pretty Miss?

She pulled her gaze away, a hint of a smile tugging at her lips. That was a new one.

“Go ahead.”

Charlotte slipped her hands out of her pockets and held them out, breathing in the sharp scent of disinfectant again.

“Please, come in.”
