Solenia basically belonged to the N Organization now. With Franco’s wealth, they’d never have to worry about funding again. The man could outspend entire countries without breaking a sweat.
As Charlotte checked the latest medical report, she glanced at the clock. By now, almost all the dark blood that had poisoned Nora for years should be gone. In five minutes, Nora would wake up.
Charlotte almost smiled, wondering how her father would react when he realized she existed. She wanted answers too. Why had they both abandoned her? Why did nobody want her back then?
She flipped through the report, her mood souring. Her own mother never searched for her, and her father had locked her up like she was a problem to hide. They could forget about making it up to her. She wasn’t going to make this easy for them.

In the bedroom, Nora had just finished throwing up what felt like a lifetime of black blood. The doctors hovered, ready to wheel her into surgery, but she finally stopped, weak and shaking. Slowly, she opened her eyes.
“Mr. Hawk, Mrs. Hawk is awake,” someone called out.
Franco rushed over and gathered her gently into his arms. “Nora…”
Still foggy, Nora’s eyes darted around the room, searching. “Lottie…”
“What?” Franco leaned in, brushing her hair from her forehead, his voice soft. “Nora, are you in pain? Tell me where it hurts.”
Nora didn’t answer. She looked around again, but Lottie wasn’t there. Her face fell.
No Lottie… But she remembered. The last time she woke up, Lottie had been right there, holding her hand. Such a beautiful girl, standing by her bed, giving her treatments and talking to her. She couldn’t have imagined that. Her Lottie really had come back to her.
“It wasn’t you… She was here…” Nora shook her head and tried to sit up. “She talked to me. I heard her.”
“Nora, what is it?” Franco steadied her, his eyes gentle. “Who are you looking for?”
The moment he spoke, tears streamed down Nora’s cheeks. She was crying so hard she could barely breathe, pain and longing twisting together.
