The maid was at a loss for words. Mrs. Hawk’s whole face scrunched up with misery, yet she still insisted the medicine wasn’t bitter.

Charlotte smiled and kept coaxing her mom to take another sip.

Not far away, Franco watched the whole mother-daughter reunion unfold. Hearing Charlotte call Nora “Mom” stung more than he expected. He felt like a total outsider.

Lottie had recognized Nora as her mother. That much was obvious. But she hadn’t called him Dad. Was she still mad at him for what happened before? Did she only want her mom, not him?

Franco took a deep breath and was about to walk over, hoping to win Charlotte over, when the butler hurried in, looking unusually serious.

“Mr. Hawk, there’s a visitor.”

A visitor? Franco was already feeling left out. Now someone was interrupting too. His mood went from bad to worse.

“I don’t want to see anyone right now,” he snapped.

“But…” The butler seemed nervous, his face pale. Hadn’t Mr. Hawk just gotten his daughter back? This was supposed to be a happy day. Why was he so upset?

The butler glanced at Charlotte, then back at Franco, and seemed to put the pieces together. Charlotte was holding a grudge. Franco probably regretted how harsh he’d been before.

No wonder he’d thought Charlotte was different the first time they met.

“But…” The butler hesitated, then lowered his voice as he glanced quickly at Charlotte. “It’s the gentleman who came with Miss Charlotte last time.”
