What was she so worried about anyway?
Charlotte poured Nora a glass of water, her voice soft. “What are you looking at?”
Nora finally turned back to her, accepting the glass with a gentle smile. “Your dad might act tough with Anthony, but I can tell he’s already accepted him.”
Honestly, with his temper, if he hadn’t, Anthony would’ve been out the door by now.
“Anthony,” Nora asked quietly, “did Charlotte’s dad say you’ve already met her grandpa?”
“Yes,” Anthony answered politely. “We’ve both met each other’s families.”
“And Lottie’s grandpa is okay with you two being together?”
At the mention of her father all the way in Cabinda, Nora’s voice went a little hoarse. Her eyes turned red. She felt like such a terrible daughter. When she was a kid, she was always getting into trouble, driving her dad up the wall. Later on, she joined a research institute and had to keep her identity secret, which meant she barely ever came home. Then after everything that happened in Solenia, she cut off all contact to protect the Gates family. It was only when she was on the edge of death that she told them about Lottie. She just wanted her family to know she was okay. She wanted them to worry less.
But she never imagined it would be twenty years before they saw each other again. She never thought they’d actually find Lottie.
Anthony offered her a gentle, reassuring smile. “Yes, our families know. Everyone’s given their blessing.”
If Lottie weren’t still in college and under twenty, they’d probably already be married.
“Lottie’s grandpa has always been a good judge of character. If he’s on board, there’s nothing more for me to say.” Nora looked at Charlotte and smiled warmly. “It’s pretty obvious Lottie really likes you.”
Charlotte, who had been staring at her hands, suddenly looked up. Her cheeks flamed pink. “I don’t like him that much. He’s definitely the one who likes me more. And for the record, he chased after me.”
She sounded a little nervous at the end.
Anthony’s smile softened, his tone full of affection. “That’s true. I liked her first, and I was the one who did all the chasing.”
