“No, I was just asking. I saw a news story recently that seemed to involve Patti Yale, but it mentioned her and James being caught by his wife. I thought it was strange, so I was curious.”

Leonie grimaced. “That Patti woman has a terrible reputation. My uncle would have to be an idiot to be with her. I’ll admit, she was nice to him for a while, but that was right when the Everhart family was struggling, and my uncle was in a bad place. She took advantage of his vulnerability. So, yes, they did have a thing back then.”

Leonie paused, thinking. “Well, I’m not sure you could even call it a ‘thing.’ At least, my uncle was very considerate of her. She’d had a fight with her family and run away, so he let her stay in that apartment we visited. She lived there for months. Then, for some reason, they stopped seeing each other, and I heard she went abroad. My uncle has been so busy with the family business all these years that he hasn't dated anyone. If you had to point to any romantic history, it would be that time he spent with Patti. But I don’t think my uncle is the type to love and leave someone. If he were really with her, he would have taken responsibility. Since he married you instead, I’m sure there’s nothing between him and Patti Yale.”

Gwyneth’s resolve wavered. It wasn’t that she didn’t want to believe Hawthorne, but his past actions had hurt her too deeply.
