Huglan still feared she might walk away.

Alice stood up and walked to the door. She looked down at him.

“You understand my temper well,” she said calmly. “If you had stayed with your wife and lived a proper life, you might have had a decent old age.

“But if you keep pushing your luck,” she warned, “no one can save you.”

Her words were too deep for him.

Huglan didn’t understand a thing.

Alice returned to the office and learned that Ruby had gone to a board meeting.

Luckily, the office was full of people who loved gossip. It didn’t take long for Alice to hear what the meeting was about.
