"And how exactly should I apologize, Anne?" Max asked.

Anne turned her large, round eyes toward her mother. Felicia dabbed a bit of lotion onto the back of her hand and smiled. "Let’s get your face moisturized first."

Ignoring her father's question entirely, Anne placed her smart-watch on the coffee table and trotted over to her mother. She tilted her little head up and obediently closed her eyes. Felicia gently dotted the cream across Anne's face with her fingertips before massaging it in evenly. Her daughter's cheeks were so soft and plump that Felicia could not resist giving one a gentle pinch. "How did you get so pretty?"

Anne flashed a bright, toothy smile. "Because mom is pretty. I look just like you." She leaned affectionately against Felicia's chest, nuzzling her. "You smell so good, Mom. I love how you smell."

Left entirely abandoned on the other end of the line, Max sat in silence, listening to the warm, peaceful exchange between mother and daughter. The hospital lobby was agonizingly quiet at this hour, making his isolation feel even sharper as he sat there alone.

Felicia eventually took Anne downstairs, thoroughly banishing Max from her mind. Left with no other choice, Max sighed, hung up the phone, collected his prescribed medication, and finally left the hospital.
