Max ended the call, set his phone on the nightstand, and reached over to flick off the lamp. The room was instantly plunged into darkness. The room settled into an oppressive quiet. Yet, Felicia's mind was completely occupied by the echoes of Anne's tiny voice. She found it impossible to calm her racing heart.

The following morning, Felicia awoke feeling incredibly hot and terribly weighed down. As her consciousness slowly returned, the first thing her eyes focused on was the devastatingly handsome, peaceful face of the man sleeping beside her. She froze in shock. Still mostly asleep, Max stared at her with hazy eyes.

"I need to use the bathroom," Felicia urged impatiently.

Max finally registered the woman trapped against his chest and lazily rolled onto his back. The oppressive weight instantly vanished. Felicia scrambled toward the edge of the bed, threw the covers aside, and practically sprinted to the bathroom. When she finally emerged after freshening up, she found Max fully awake and propped up against the headboard. His posture was languid, his short hair attractively rumpled from sleep. Perhaps because he had just woken up, the terrifying, murderous edge in his gaze had softened significantly compared to the night before.

Felicia stood awkwardly in the middle of the room, staring at him. Their eyes locked across the space. The air in the room was exceptionally still. Neither of them uttered a single word. His unblinking scrutiny made Felicia incredibly uncomfortable. After an agonizingly long silence, she finally took the initiative. "I think we need to talk."
