Whenever Anne called, he dropped everything and rushed home. These days, his whole life revolved around that little girl. Because of her, moments alone together were getting rarer and rarer.
She didn’t even dare let a hint of frustration slip. Who would have thought Max could love that ugly woman’s daughter so much?
“Alright,” she said, forcing a smile. “Go check on Anne. I’ll visit her another time.”
Max just gave a quiet nod.
Outside the infirmary, Colt and the others lingered by the door. Felicia walked over.
"Colt."
He turned at her voice.
Right then, Max stepped out of the room.
"Mr. Hawthorne, is Miss Curtis alright?" Colt asked, worry in his tone.
Felicia glanced at Max. His eyes landed on her, cool and unreadable.
She met his gaze, steady and composed. “I'm really sorry.”
Max’s dark eyes lingered on her. His voice was low, impossible to read. “Miss Evelynn, your tennis skills are impressive.”
Felicia said nothing.
Without another word, Max turned to Colt, said goodbye, and strode away. Colt and Mr. Reyes hurried after him, leaving Felicia standing there, watching their backs as they left.
"Hey, Evelynn."
She turned to see Kennedy, a polite smile on her lips that didn’t quite reach her eyes.
Inside the room, Andrea heard the whole exchange. After all these years, she’d never seen Kennedy show that kind of interest in anyone else. Her mood, already bad, just got worse.
When Kennedy came back in, one of his friends nudged him. “You sure she doesn’t have a boyfriend? Jeremy was all over her.”
“Evelynn is gorgeous, though. I’ve never seen her around before.”
They’d all met plenty of beautiful women, but Evelynn was different. She had that unique beauty, the kind that still managed to feel innocent and tempting at the same time. Guys couldn’t help but notice.
Lisa, sitting with Andrea, rolled her eyes. “She looks like she’s had work done. Who knows if her chest is even real.”
On her way back to the tennis courts, Felicia ran into Colt and Mr. Reyes as they were returning from seeing Max off.
Colt walked over to her. “I know you didn’t mean any harm, Evelynn. Mr. Hawthorne isn’t going to hold it against you. Actually, we have an exclusive interview set up for next week. You can use that chance to thank him properly.”
