Felicia hung up and stood still for a moment, trying to calm herself down before making her way toward the restroom. She let Jeremy and the others know where she was headed. Their all-access passes got them to the front of every ride, but when it came to the bathrooms, there was no special treatment. She had to wait in line with everyone else.

Just as she started walking, a bunch of kids came barreling past, chasing each other and laughing. Felicia quickly stepped to the side to avoid them, but in the rush, her foot landed squarely on someone else’s. She turned around instantly, ready to apologize. “Sorry, I didn’t see you…”

The words fell flat as soon as she realized who she’d stepped on. It’s Max.

For a second, Felicia froze, her mind racing. She took a step back, putting some space between them. That subtle, clean scent he’d noticed for just a moment disappeared as she moved away. Max watched her, his face unreadable and cold.

Felicia’s eyes dropped to his shoe. She’d left a clear mark on the shiny leather. “I really am sorry,” she said, keeping her voice steady. “It was an accident.”

Max looked anything but amused. She could tell just by the way his jaw tightened. He’d always been a little obsessive about cleanliness, and today of all days, she’d managed to step on him. What were the odds? Amusement parks were never his thing. If Anne hadn’t wanted to come, he wouldn’t be caught dead here. At least, when it came to Anne, he seemed to know how to show up as a dad.

He narrowed his dark eyes. “Only you know if it was an accident.”

Felicia almost laughed out loud. “Wow, Mr. Hawthorne. Not only are you arrogant and rude, you’re also completely unreasonable. Do you think I have eyes in the back of my head? Or are you saying you were following me on purpose? Who’s the real stalker here?”

The girls stood there speechless.

Meanwhile, Max’s face got even darker. Felicia didn’t give him a chance to say anything. She walked right up, twisted the cap off, and poured the water straight onto his shoe, rinsing away the dirt and leaving a big wet spot behind.

He stared at his now-soaked shoe, looking even more furious. Felicia met his icy glare head-on. “See? Now it’s clean.”

She tossed the empty bottle in the trash, turned on her heel, and headed for the restroom. She joined the line, feeling everyone’s eyes on her as she left Max standing there alone. No one dared get too close.
