Jeremy walked right up to Felicia, giving her a quick once-over. “Are you alright?” he asked.

Felicia met his eyes and shook her head just a little. “I’m fine.”

Max watched the two of them quietly.

Jeremy glanced over at Max, then let his eyes travel to Mitch, who was being helped up by a couple of bodyguards. Instantly, it all clicked for Jeremy. His expression grew serious as he looked at Max. “Mr. Hawthorne, what happened here?”

The tension in the air was thick enough to cut with a knife as they stared each other down.

Mitch recognized Jeremy, and the color drained from his face. In the Capital, Jeremy was one of the few people who could go toe to toe with Max, both in power and in how ruthless they could be. Now Mitch realized the girl he’d messed with was actually connected to Jeremy. Regret washed over him.

Wyatt stepped in, trying to smooth things over. “It’s just a misunderstanding. She’s fine, so no harm done. Jeremy, is this your girlfriend? Looks like you finally figured things out. How come you never mentioned her before?”

Wyatt was Nate’s oldest grandson and had known Jeremy for years.

Jeremy gave him a slight smile, dodging the question completely. “How’s Nate doing lately? I’ve been meaning to check in on him.”

Wyatt chuckled. “He’s doing great. Actually, he mentioned you just a couple days ago. It’s been a while since you’ve stopped by.”

Jeremy nodded. “I’ve been busy, but once things settle down, I’ll definitely come by.”

They chatted for a moment, and the pressure in the room finally started to ease.

“We’ll head out now,” Jeremy said.

“Yeah, let’s catch up soon,” Wyatt replied.

Jeremy nodded again, then gently put his hand on Felicia’s shoulder and led her out of the bar.

Once they were gone, Wyatt turned to Max, whose face was unreadable. He took a step closer. “So, what did Jeremy’s girlfriend do to get on your bad side?”

Since Jeremy hadn’t denied it, Wyatt just assumed it was true. He’d never seen Jeremy act this protective before.

Kennedy nodded quietly.

Felicia sank into the passenger seat of Jeremy’s car, letting her head rest against the back. She shut her eyes as exhaustion crept over her, making the alcohol hit even harder.

Jeremy glanced her way but didn’t say anything, just drove off into the night.

Around ten o’clock, a Rolls Royce eased into a high-security, luxury apartment complex. The car stopped in front of a building. The driver got out and opened the door for a tall, imposing man, who stepped out and headed inside. He took the elevator up to the sixth floor.

Tatiana had just stepped out of her bedroom when she heard the housekeeper call out, “Mr. Hawthrone”

Max walked into the living room, where toys and kids’ things were scattered everywhere. He looked at Tatiana. “Is Anne asleep?”

“She is. What did you do to make her so upset today?”

Earlier that afternoon, not long after Felicia left, Anne refused to eat lunch and called her grandmother, insisting she wanted to go home.
