Max spoke gently, “Grandma isn’t trying to fool you. She’s just worried that Evelynn might hurt you.”

Anne sniffled, her voice small. “But Evelynn would never hurt me.”

“Grandma said you talk to her on the phone every day,” Max went on. “She doesn’t know Evelynn, so she’s worried you trust someone outside the family too much. What if something goes wrong? You know how much your grandma loves you, right?”

Anne twisted her fingers together, cheeks puffed out, silent. Deep down, she was completely sure Evelynn liked her. Evelynn would never, ever hurt her.

She loved listening to Evelynn’s voice, loved hearing her sing. It was so soothing, just like when Mandy’s mom used to sing to her.

She understood what her dad meant, though. She just didn’t know how to explain that Evelynn was safe. She couldn’t put her feelings into words.

“How about we wait until Dad figures things out a little more? Then you can talk to her again, okay?” Max asked. He was patient, talking her through it until Anne finally nodded.

When the call ended, Max wasted no time. He had their return to the Capital arranged for that very day, even though he’d promised Andrea they’d go back on Monday.

Tatiana came over to apologize to Anne.

Anne wasn’t the type to hold a grudge. She knew how much her grandma loved her, and she really did love her back, so she accepted the apology.

She washed her face and went down for breakfast, but her chest felt heavy. She missed Evelynn already and hated that she couldn’t reach out to her.

Felicia stepped into the office and headed straight for Jeremy’s office. They talked for almost an hour.

Most of that doubt came from the older male managers who now had to report to her.

They figured Jeremy had Jett tag along because he didn’t think Felicia could handle things on her own. If the deal went through, everyone would see Felicia as the hero, but they believed Jett would be the one who actually pulled it off.

Around one, Felicia and Mason got into the company car and headed to the train station. The train was the best way to get to Autumnridge.

Jett and Grady had already gone the day before.

About thirty minutes later, the car rolled up to the station. Instead of heading straight in, Felicia made her way to the arrivals area.

Heather had called earlier that morning. She and Yara had been traveling out of town. They’d stopped by a church that was supposed to be really special and, thinking of Felicia, Heather had picked up a charm for her—something for good luck and safe travels.
