Max was definitely the one who shut down the meeting. He’d already figured out exactly what she was trying to do. With how vengeful he could be, there was no way his trip to Autumnridge meant anything good.

Anne’s excitement faded when Felicia didn’t answer right away. She called out again, her tone more careful. “Evelynn?”

Felicia snapped back to the moment. Whatever. If it meant she could see her daughter, she’d put up with anything. They were rivals now, anyway. Sooner or later, they were bound to clash. This was just the beginning.

“Of course you can come see me,” Felicia said, her voice gentle and warm.

Anne’s whole mood lifted. “That’s perfect! I’ll call you once Dad and I get to Autumnridge.”

“Alright.”

Felicia hung up and let herself breathe out, the tension leaving her shoulders. She set her phone aside, changed into workout clothes, and headed for the hotel gym to clear her head.

The next morning, she was set to sign the contract with Westfield Clinical Research at ten.

At nine sharp, she left the hotel. Mason was behind the wheel, and Felicia sat in the back, skimming through documents and answering calls. She’d just ended a call when the car jolted out of nowhere.

She looked up. “What happened?”

Mason’s jaw was tight, his knuckles white on the wheel. “Something’s wrong with the accelerator and brakes.”

They were about to merge onto the overpass, and there was no way to slow down. The brakes weren’t working. On top of that, it was rush hour.

“Evelynn, hold on!” Mason’s voice was urgent.

Felicia immediately grabbed the handle above her window.

Mason wrestled with the steering wheel, but the car spun out of control, sideswiping other vehicles. Horns blared all around them. People on the sidewalks started running, trying to get out of the way.

Felicia’s heart nearly stopped when she saw they were barreling straight toward a crosswalk crowded with pedestrians.

“Watch out!”

Mason jerked the wheel as hard as he could. The car slammed into a big tree by the side of the road, finally coming to a shuddering stop.

“They know what happened. They postponed the signing. Everyone understands.”

She nodded. “What time is it?”

“It’s four in the afternoon. You’ve been out for about seven hours. You have a head injury, but everything else looks good. The doctors want you to stay here for a couple of days, just to be safe.”

When Jeremy heard about the crash, he’d dropped everything and rushed straight over.

Felicia tried to sit up a little.

Jeremy adjusted the bed so she could lean back. Her head was wrapped in bandages and she still felt dizzy, but at least she was awake. Jeremy poured her a glass of water and handed it to her.

He explained that he’d already called in lawyers to handle the aftermath. The insurance would cover everything. There were some injuries, but thankfully, no one had died.

“They’ve already checked the car,” he told her. “Both the accelerator and brakes were sabotaged. The police are investigating.”

Felicia took a careful sip of water and set the cup on the nightstand. She had her own ideas about who might want to hurt her, but for now, she’d wait to see what the investigation uncovered.
