“I just want Daddy and Evelynn to get along,” Anne mumbled under her breath.
She couldn’t really explain why. It just made sense in her head. She saw how Uncle Jeremy and Evelynn always got along so well, and she wished her dad could be like that too.
Max reached over and gently patted her hair. “Alright, stop overthinking it.”
“But can you?” Anne pressed, looking up at him with wide, searching eyes. She really wanted a straight answer.
“It’s not about whether I can or not,” Max replied. “I barely know Evelynn.”
Anne frowned. “So, can’t you just treat her like Aunt Andrea?”
Max didn’t answer and changed the subject, pretending not to hear the question.

Jeremy didn’t stay long at the hospital. After a while, he said goodbye to Felicia and headed out.
The next morning, after Felicia’s checkup, the doctor announced she could be discharged for a while. She thought about it for a second, then picked up her phone and dialed Max’s number. She hadn’t saved it, but Anne had used his phone to call her before.
The phone rang twice, then someone picked up.
“Evelynn, why are you calling Max?” Andrea’s voice came through the speaker.
Felicia paused, caught off guard. So Andrea had followed them to Autumnridge.
She noticed that Max had saved her name in his phone, probably because Anne had done it for him.
Felicia’s tone turned cold. “I need to talk to Max. Please give him the phone.”
She had no interest in pretending to be friendly with Andrea anymore.
“You can just tell me. I’ll let him know,” Andrea offered.
Felicia scoffed. “Who knows what you’d say, Miss Curtis. You might twist my words or just pretend you never heard me.”
Andrea’s face must have been a sight, Felicia thought. Nobody ever spoke to her like that.
Just then, Max came out of the bathroom with Anne, both of them fresh-faced and ready for the day. He saw Andrea holding his phone and asked, “Who’s on the phone?”
Andrea looked like she wanted to hang up, but with Anne right there, she had to swallow her frustration and hand the phone over.
Max glanced at the screen. “Hello?”
Felicia’s voice was flat. “I have something to do this morning and won’t be at the hospital. Please tell Anne.”
“Alright,” Max replied.
Andrea had wanted to come yesterday, but Max told her to wait until today.
Anne’s little face fell. She’d gotten up extra early, hoping to see Evelynn at the hospital.
“Where did she go? She’s still sick.”
Andrea stepped closer, crouching down with a gentle smile. “How about I take you to the ocean park today? We can see the dolphins you love.”
Anne looked down, her face gloomy. “I don’t want to go to the ocean park.”
Andrea’s smile faltered for a moment.
Max tried to cheer her up. “Then where do you want to go, Anne?”
Anne shuffled over to the sofa and sat down, her legs swinging back and forth. “I don’t want to go anywhere,” she said quietly, sounding defeated.
Max sat next to her. “Then stay with me today.”
Anne kept her head down and didn’t answer.
Max handed her his phone. “Why don’t you call Evelynn yourself?”
Anne stared at the phone, took it, and unlocked the screen. The wallpaper was a picture of her in a blue princess dress, holding the strings of some balloons, looking happier than she felt right now.
