Andrea kept an eye on their table. “Luke definitely knows what’s going on, but he and Jeremy are pretty close,” she said.

Max sat quietly, swirling his glass of red wine. The dim light made it hard to read his expression, his eyes hidden behind the reflection of the drink.

Anne leaned in to chat with Luke, her voice sweet and curious. “When Evelynn called today, I heard a voice that sounded just like yours.”

So Anne must have been there when Felicia called him.

Luke reached out and gently ruffled her hair. “That’s quite the coincidence.”

“Uncle Jeremy knows Evelynn. Does that mean you know her too?”

This little girl was sharper than she looked.

Luke didn’t answer right away. Instead, he asked, “Do you like her a lot, Anne?”

Anne nodded, her eyes bright. “I do. She’s really gentle.” Her pout returned as she added, “I wanted to stay with her today, but Daddy took me away. He said I’d get sick if I stayed in the hospital.”

Luke tried to soothe her. “Daddy just cares about you. Hospitals have lots of germs. If you got sick, your great-grandparents, your grandparents, and Daddy would all be so worried.”

“I know, but I still miss Evelynn.”

“If you miss her, you can always call or video chat with her.”

Anne didn’t say anything, but her mood seemed to lift.

After dinner, Max walked over and gave Anne a gentle look. “Time to go, Anne.”

Luke smiled at her. “Bye, Anne. Head home with your dad.”

Anne waved at them, her voice soft. “Bye, Uncle Luke. Bye, Uncle Jeremy.”

Luke helped her down from her chair. Max picked her up, nodded at Luke and Jeremy, then carried Anne out of the restaurant.

“Hmm?” Max replied, his voice soft.

Anne tilted her head up to look at him. “I wish you liked Evelynn.”

Max’s hand paused for a second. He looked at her with gentle patience. “Why do you want Daddy to like Evelynn?”

Anne pouted, her voice small. “I want you and Evelynn to be together. That way, I can be with her every day.”

Max brushed his thumb softly over her cheek. “You like Evelynn that much? Don’t tell me you don’t like Daddy anymore.”

Anne’s arms flew around his neck. “No way. I love you the most, Daddy. I’ll never stop loving you.”

Max smiled, his hand ruffling her hair. “You will always be my favourite.”

Wrapped up in her dad’s arms, Anne giggled, her worries forgotten. Before long, she drifted off to sleep, content and safe.
