He barely acknowledged her, just exchanged a few words with Tatiana before leaving without so much as a glance in Felicia’s direction. Tatiana, still simmering with anger, scolded Felicia a few more times before storming out. Marian and Amaris trailed after her, making sure she got to her car.

Felicia stayed where she was for a moment, staring up at the ceiling as she tried to steady her breath. Then she turned and headed for her bedroom. Judging by Tatiana’s attitude, Max probably hadn’t told his mom about their plan to get divorced after the baby was born. If he had, Tatiana wouldn’t be so furious. After all, Felicia would only be her daughter-in-law for another couple of months.

She changed out of her stained clothes and, on her way out, bumped into Marian and Amaris in the living room. They shot her icy looks before disappearing into the dining room. Felicia ignored them, grabbed her suitcase, and took the elevator down to the garage.

Her Audi, a sixty-thousand-dollar wedding gift from her dad, sat awkwardly among the luxury cars. It was all her father could afford back then. Parked in Max’s garage, it looked completely out of place, just like she did in his world. The difference between them felt huge, impossible to cross.

At work, Felicia spent the day handing things over to another employee. Sandy, as usual, gave her dirty looks and a few snide comments, but didn’t actually make her job any harder. After hours, Felicia stayed late to finish up the tasks Max had dumped on her. She knew he wouldn’t even bother to check her work, but she still had to get it done. She’d already made some progress during lunch, so she aimed to finish everything before eleven.

Ava called to check in. “When are you coming home?”

“I’ve got to work late tonight. I’ll be home later.”

Ava sounded worried. “I’ll ask Greg to pick you up.”

“I drove myself today.”

“He’ll just wait for you downstairs, okay? It’s late and you’re pregnant. I’d feel better if someone was with you.”

He seemed different from Kennedy. Maybe he just didn’t know her story, didn’t realize she was the one holding onto the spot that should’ve belonged to his sister.

“No problem,” he said.

Felicia didn’t want to talk. She wanted nothing to do with anyone connected to Max, especially not the brother of the girl Max loved. “If you’ll excuse me.”

Darin picked up on her distance and stepped aside. As Felicia walked past him, she spotted Greg coming into the lobby with a food container. She called out, “Greg, over here!”

Darin automatically glanced over, catching sight of Greg heading their way.
