This really hurt Max’s pride.
No surprise, he was in a foul mood.
When Simon met with Max that night, he looked like a man ready to face anything. Max had sent him back to the Capital in the middle of the night, and whatever punishment was waiting for him would come after Max returned.
They met at Max’s hotel.
Jeremy arrived to find Max already there. Anne was with him.
Maybe it was all the time she’d spent at the hospital, but Anne had woken up with a cold and a slight fever that morning. She looked exhausted, curled against her dad’s chest, her little face pale and tired. It made you want to scoop her up and never let go.
Anne always clung to Max when she wasn’t feeling well, so of course he brought her along.
When she saw Jeremy, she called out softly, “Uncle Jeremy.”
Jeremy nodded and glanced at Max. “What happened to Anne?”
Max answered quietly, “She’s got a cold and a bit of a fever.”
Anne looked at Jeremy, her voice barely above a whisper. “Uncle Jeremy, when will Evelynn get better?”
Jeremy gave her a warm smile. “As soon as you’re better, Evelynn will be too.”
Anne’s answer was soft and determined. “Then I have to get better soon.”
“Exactly. You need to get plenty of rest.” Max brushed her hair back and coaxed, “Go to sleep now, sweetheart.”
Jeremy stepped out so Max could settle Anne.
After about fifteen minutes, Anne finally drifted off in Max’s arms. He didn’t put her down. If she woke up and didn’t see her dad, she’d burst into tears.
Jeremy came back in, lowering his voice. “Mr. Hawthorne, you should take care of Anne for now. We can talk another time.”
Max gave a short, cold laugh, his eyes never warming. “Alright. I get where you stand, Mr. Milman.”
The room went icy.
Jeremy stood. “Then I’ll leave you to it, Mr. Hawthorne.”
He was almost at the door when Max called after him, “Do you know where Felicia is these days?”
Jeremy paused, then turned back. “So you still remember Felicia. I figured after five years, she’d be long gone from your mind.”
Max looked up. His eyes were dark and cold, sharp as glass. He said nothing.
Jeremy just replied, “She’s still in the States.” He left it at that and walked out.
Max watched him go and let out a quiet, bitter laugh.
