Luke let out a sigh, shut her door, and walked around to the driver’s side. He slid in behind the wheel and drove off. Maybe it was the drinks she’d had, but Felicia’s stomach was hurting more and more. Luke didn’t hesitate. He turned the car around and headed straight for the hospital.
While they were on the way, Tommy called. Felicia told him not to worry and to go home.
At the hospital, the doctor checked Felicia over and hooked her up to an IV. Luke stayed with her the whole time and ordered some warm soup to settle her stomach. Lying back against the hospital bed, Felicia started to feel a bit better with the IV in her arm. Luke sat by her side, feeding her soup. When some color returned to her cheeks, he finally spoke up. “Of all people to run into, it had to be Max.”
Dinner that night had mostly been about drinking. Felicia took a slow spoonful of soup. “It wasn’t a random run-in. It was a dinner with BlueMarble Investments.”
She hadn’t expected Max to show up at all.
Luke frowned. “With BlueMarble? Really?”
Felicia gave him a quick rundown of what had happened.
“Sounds like you and Max are going to be seeing a lot of each other at work,” Luke said.
Felicia nodded. “Yeah, there’s no avoiding him. I figured it would happen sooner or later.”
She’d thought that seeing Max again would mean nothing more than some polite, distant conversation. She never imagined he’d go out of his way to make her life difficult. Just thinking about it made her stomach twist all over again.
Luke asked about the divorce.
Felicia replied, “The court date is in two weeks.”
Cameron still hadn’t heard anything from Max’s side, even after all this time.
Luke made a quiet noise, not saying much, but he couldn’t help feeling uneasy. He knew what Max could be like.
Just then Felicia’s phone buzzed. It was Ava calling, asking when dinner would be over.
“It’s almost done, Mom. I’ll let you know before I come home.”
“Make sure to take care of yourself, and don’t drink too much,” Ava said.
“I know, Mom.”
Ava took Yara outside to play, leaving Heather and Felicia alone to chat.
“I’m just glad nothing serious happened to you,” Heather said. “Savannah told me about the car accident, and it scared me half to death. I had no idea your job could be so dangerous.”
“It was just a random accident. I’ll be more careful from now on. I think it was your lucky charm that saved me.”
Heather grinned. “Guess it really does work. Next time, we should go get a few more.”
Felicia laughed. “Sure.”
“But I’m still going to have my brother send a few more bodyguards your way,” Heather added.
Felicia shook her head, smiling. “That’s a bit much. If we did that, every employee would need a bodyguard for business trips.”
Heather giggled. “But you’re special.”
Felicia held up her hand. “Okay, that’s enough. Don’t say stuff like that.”
