From start to finish, he stayed calm and almost distant, never letting much show on his face. Jeremy brushed her hand with his, his voice polite but cool. “Hello.”
Andrea’s smile froze for a split second, but she quickly pulled herself together and took her hand back. “I won’t keep you from your meal, Mr. Milman.”
Jeremy nodded and stepped aside. Max and Andrea moved forward, and as they passed a private dining room, Max caught a glimpse of someone he recognized out of the corner of his eye.
Felicia was inside, chatting and laughing with Professor Michael. Suddenly, she sensed someone walking by the door. She glanced out, and even though she only saw a flash of someone’s back, she knew right away who it was. Her heart dropped, but she kept her expression steady, not giving anything away.
Right after that, Jeremy came back into the room.
Max and Andrea stepped into the elevator. Andrea looked up at him. “Max, what’s wrong?”
Max lowered his gaze, his handsome features darkened by annoyance. “Complimenting another guy right in front of me?”
Andrea shook her head, trying to sound playful. “I wasn’t. I was just being polite. Seriously, Max, you’re the best-looking guy in the world to me.”
She’d been feeling a little down about how Jeremy barely reacted to her, but Max’s jealousy made her feel so much better. She stretched up and kissed him on the cheek.
After dinner, Jeremy and Felicia walked Professor Michael and his assistant out to their car. The whole evening had gone really well. Just before leaving, Professor Michael shook Jeremy’s hand again and told Felicia to take care of herself and her baby. There was no need to worry about her enrollment.
Felicia was so happy. It had been a long time since she’d felt this good.
Once Professor Michael left, Felicia climbed into Jeremy’s car. His assistant was driving.
“Thank you for today, Mr. Milman.”
Jeremy shook his head. “You don’t need to thank me. I just pointed you in the right direction. It was your own talent that impressed Professor Michael. Don’t worry about school. Have your baby, and get some rest.”
Ava continued massaging Felicia’s swollen legs. “That’s good, at least.”
That night, Max came home to Oakridge Estate.
“Welcome home, sir,” Marian greeted him, taking his coat.
His voice was cold. “Where is she?”
Marian hesitated, then started explaining. “Who knows? The other day, Mrs. Hawthorne tried to teach her some manners, and she just packed a bag and left. No idea where she got such a temper. I guess she didn’t take what Mrs. Hawthorne said to heart.”
Felicia had been gone for days, but Marian and Amaris hadn’t really cared. They figured she’d gone back to her family and honestly, they were just as happy not seeing her around.
Max listened, his expression hard and impossible to read. He didn’t say a word, just walked upstairs in silence.
