Jeremy gave her a small, easy smile before turning back to his computer, answering her without missing a beat.

It was almost nine. Felicia took Anne upstairs to get settled for the night.

“I’ll send you the files in a bit. Take another look when you get a chance,” Jeremy said.

“Alright,” Felicia replied.

Anne waved goodbye as they left.

“Don’t forget to bring Anne down for breakfast tomorrow,” Heather called after them.

Felicia nodded. “I will.”

Upstairs, Felicia guided Anne into the apartment. She didn’t stay here often, but the place was always spotless thanks to the housekeeper, so there was nothing left to tidy up.

Felicia started running a bath for Anne. Just then, a voice from the living room made her pause.

“Daddy.”

Felicia stopped in her tracks and hurried out of the bathroom.

Anne was at the door, letting Max in. Felicia stared, caught off guard.

Anne came in, her small hand tucked into her father’s. Max was carrying a bag, probably packed with Anne’s things.

Felicia walked over, frowning. “What are you doing here?”

Before Max could answer, Anne spoke up, her voice barely above a whisper. “Evelynn, Daddy called me. I told him I wanted to stay with you, so he brought my clothes.” She sounded timid, like she was worried Felicia might be upset.

Felicia felt her heart soften all at once.

She bent down and pulled Anne into a hug. “Come on, let’s get you ready for your bath.”

When Anne realized Felicia wasn’t mad, her tense little face relaxed. She nodded, suddenly much happier.

Max held out the bag to Felicia. “Anne’s clothes.”

Felicia took it with a glance, then scooped Anne up and headed back to the bathroom.

Half an hour later, Anne was clean and changed. She popped out of the bathroom, her hair still damp.

Felicia studied the necklace, then looked at Anne’s hopeful face, her eyes shining with excitement.

A soft smile tugged at Felicia’s lips. “I love it.”

Anne lit up, grinning from ear to ear.

“Alright, time for bed,” Felicia said gently.

“Okay.”

Felicia put the necklace away and led Anne to the bedroom. Even though everything was new and unfamiliar, with Evelynn there, Anne drifted off to sleep feeling safe.

Once Anne was out, Felicia started getting ready to shower and finish some work.

But Max was still on her mind.

She stepped quietly out of the bedroom and saw him sitting on the sofa. Walking over, she held out the velvet box to him.

“Take it back,” she said, her voice calm. “I don’t need the necklace.”
