Max glanced down at Anne. “Go upstairs with Evelynn for now. Daddy needs to finish up some work.”

“Okay.”

Anne tipped her head up and planted a kiss on his cheek.

Felicia brought Anne upstairs and started their bedtime routine. She washed Anne’s face, helped her brush her teeth, and got her changed into pajamas.

But Anne wasn’t ready to settle down. She missed her dad. It had been days since she’d seen him, and all she wanted was to be close to him.

“Go on, then,” Felicia said, giving her a gentle nudge.

“Aren’t you coming too?” Anne asked, hope in her voice.

“I’ve got a few things to take care of.”

Anne pouted. “Alright, I guess.”

Felicia stayed in her room. She called Heather. “Hey, Heather, you don’t need to come pick up Anne tomorrow morning.”

“What happened? Aren’t you going to that signing ceremony tomorrow?”

“Max is here,” Felicia said quietly. “He’ll probably want to spend time with Anne.”

Heather sounded surprised. “Max is there? He really doesn’t trust you alone with Anne?”

“He said he’s here for work.”

BlueMarble Investments had its biggest office in Northwick, so Max did come here for business pretty often.

Heather went quiet for a second. “So, are you still staying there?”

Felicia didn’t want to live under the same roof as Max. She just didn’t know how to explain that to Anne yet.

“I’ll figure it out tomorrow.”

“Where’s Evelynn?”

The nanny smiled. “Good morning, miss. Evelynn left about an hour ago.”

Anne stopped in her tracks. “She left so early?”

Max came by just then and overheard. When he saw the disappointed look on Anne’s face, he bent down and scooped her up.

“It’s alright. Evelynn probably has a lot of work to do.”

“But she said she’d bake with me this morning,” Anne said, her voice small.

“Maybe something came up. You can ask her about it later,” Max said, trying to comfort her.

“I’ll wait for her to come back. She’s busy with work. I shouldn’t bother her,” Anne said softly.

Max hugged her tighter. “You’re such a thoughtful girl, Anne.”
