Felicia was really starting to get on Miranda’s nerves. When Felicia first married Max five years ago, she had seemed sweet and easy to get along with. Back then, Miranda actually thought Felicia would be a good wife, someone who’d take care of Max and run the house well, so she’d given her plenty of advice. But now, it felt like Felicia was hiding a lot more than she let on.

Max spoke up, his voice calm. “It wasn’t really like that.”

Miranda frowned. “What do you mean?”

He gave a little half-smile, almost mocking. “Things are just temporary.”

Miranda’s face grew more serious.

Brysen, who had been listening in, jumped in with a scowl. “Max, if she wants to leave, let her go. Cut things off clean. What’s the point in keeping her around? Temporary doesn’t mean anything. Don’t let Anne near her. What if she tries to use Anne to get to you?”

Max’s reply was cold. “She’s not capable of that. Grandpa, Grandma, don’t worry about the divorce. I know what I’m doing.”

“Daddy…” Anne came running back into the living room.

Miranda and Brysen fell silent.

Anne threw herself into Max’s arms. “Daddy, can you call Mommy and ask her to come for dinner tonight at Grandpa and Grandma’s house, please?”

Max gently patted her head. “Maybe another day. Daddy’s busy tonight.”

Anne pouted. “But Evelynn said she’d only be my mommy for a week.”

Max softened his tone. “You can always ask her to stay your mommy a little longer.”

Anne hesitated, suddenly worried. “Do you think she’ll say yes? What if she thinks I’m annoying?”

“She won’t think that,” Max said.

Anne finally relaxed, reassured by his words. “Okay. I’ll ask her tonight.”

“Good girl.”

Max barely reacted. It was like he’d seen it coming all along. “Okay,” he said, and hung up.

After that, Felicia threw herself into her work. When Anne called, Felicia had to force herself to sound normal, even though her heart ached. “I’m really busy right now, sweetie. When things slow down, I’ll spend more time with you, okay?”

She’d talked to Luke the other day. He said Anne had recovered well from her surgery two years ago, and being spoiled at home had kept her happy and healthy. There were no relapses.

But knowing Anne had been upset enough recently to end up in the hospital again made Felicia feel awful. Maybe she never should have come back. Maybe she shouldn’t have made Anne depend on her.

Anne sounded a little sad that she hadn’t seen Evelynn for days, but she didn’t want to make things harder. “Okay. But… can you come with me to Mandy’s birthday this week?”

Felicia had gotten a call from Amber inviting her, and she’d planned to just send a gift. Now, hearing Anne’s little voice, she changed her mind. She was leaving soon anyway. Spending a little more time with Anne couldn’t hurt.

She agreed.

Anne’s laughter came through the phone, bright and happy for the first time in days.
