Felicia hurried over to Anne, who raced up and threw her arms around her waist. Felicia bent down a little, smoothing Anne’s hair as she asked, “Anne, what are you doing here all by yourself?”

Anne grabbed Felicia’s hand and tugged her toward the exit. “Daddy’s waiting for us outside. Come on, Evelynn, let’s go.”

They walked out of the building together. A Rolls-Royce was parked at the curb.

The driver got out, came around, and opened the back door. When Felicia got closer, she saw a man inside, leaning back with his legs crossed. She caught only a glimpse of his sharp profile. He wore a crisp black shirt, perfectly pressed trousers, and a pair of handmade red-soled leather shoes. There was something quietly striking about him.

Max set aside his tablet and glanced toward the door.

“Evelynn, come on, let’s get in.”

Felicia hesitated, standing by the car. She crouched down beside Anne and gently held her shoulders. “Where are we going, Anne?”

“There’s a new movie,” Anne said, her eyes lighting up. “Daddy and I want you to come with us to see it.”

Felicia smiled softly. “It’s getting pretty late. How about I take you to see it tomorrow instead?”

Anne pouted, clinging to Felicia’s hand. “But I want to see it tonight.”

Felicia was about to go abroad soon. She didn’t know when she’d get another chance to be with Anne. That thought made her heart ache as she looked at Anne’s hopeful face.

In the end, Felicia gave in. “Alright, tonight it is.”

They got in the car, and it pulled away from the curb.

Yvonne’s tone was steady. “Max won’t let that happen. I just wanted to see where he stands.”

“If you want to know how he feels, why not just ask him? Max doesn’t react well to being forced. Doing this will only push him away.”

Yvonne’s face darkened.

“You’ve seen how he responded,” Darin said quietly. “If you really care about Andrea, you’ll stop stirring things up for no reason.”

Yvonne looked troubled.

Darin watched her for a moment, then stood and headed upstairs. As he was leaving, Yvonne called after him. “I heard something. Max’s wife is taking him to court for a divorce, but he won’t agree. If he doesn’t love her, why hold on? Is it just because of Anne?”
